HA!
The State of the Fandom as observed by Penknife, following the release of HBP.
It contains SPOILERS!!
Speaking of, am feeling that the title is fitting. But it just makes me ANGRY now, because I HATE that man at the moment. I was willing to believe I was reading it wrong, until Harry's encounter with him inside the gates by Hagrid's hut. I think he really is evil and everything he said in chapter 2 is true. Dammit.
So, yes, maintaining my stance that "the Half-Blood Prince" is a ridonkulously stoopid and irritatingly annoying title. For a person or a book. ::grumble grumble grr::
Anyway, my favorite part of Penknife's fandom once-over is "...Remus/Sirius --> Remus/Tonks, hasn't anyone heard of bisexuality? In my day, we had to deal with het ships uphill both ways in the snow..." Snerk. So beware.
Also, Theanna, ADORE the cd. Made the discovery that Meatloaf was a favorite of Dad's, and am now craving more Meatloaf music. Not sure if this is a result of the song, or the fact that Mom knew every word to the song because Dad was apparently *quite* obsessed and I feel it's fair to assume some part of my brain recognizes this music because I do love it in insane ways. =P And Queen. I'm so an 80s child. Doode.

Shippage:
Ok, I first had the thought: "WTF, Tonks and Remus!?" And then I let out a big whooping cheer. My two favorite people in adult Harry Potter getting together was like a dream come true. As much as I adore Sirius as an easygoing foil to Remus' fairly serious personality (no pun intended), I'm not entirely certain I like him very much as a character on his own. Mainly because he can be thoughtlessly cruel. Examples include his treatment of Kreacher and his most infamous prank on Snape (more on him later) which hurt both Snape (may he rot in Hell) and Remus, who was supposed to be his friend. Add to this boredom resulting in more cruelty, and his sometimes unkind attitude towards Harry when he refused to act as James would have done, and you can see why I might not like him very much - on his own (note: this is not to say he didn't love or care about Harry. I just think he didn't do the godfather thing very well). I think Remus mellows him out enough to be entirely likable, but on his own - eh.
That being said, I am an AVID Remus/Sirius shipper, and nothing in canon has contradicted my opinion. I still firmly believe that our boys would have been romantically involved during their school years and as young men. However, something changed during Harry's first year of life, which resulted in each of their distrusting the other so much that they each believed the other to be a traitor. This may or may not have brought about the end of their romantic involvement, but I would suggest that the twelve years Sirius spent in Azkaban certainly might have done the trick. As you said, Remus spent the time trying to forget he had ever *known* Sirius, while Sirius spent the time in his own private Hell, financed by the Ministry of Magic. During that time, Remus grew up to become a 33 or 34 year old man, while Sirius remained, in many ways, the 22 year old kid who got sent to Azkaban. Thier relationship would certainly have changed. Oh, I imagine they mught have tried to pick up the pieces of their romantic relationship, but that it would never have been what it was when they were younger. Remus grew up into a graver, more serious adult, while Sirius grew into a more tortured version of his teenage self.
And yeah, bisexuality much? I think that after his romantic relationship with Sirius ended - however it ended - Remus became free to look for other romatic possibilities. So... Tonks. SQUEE!!!!! I, too, will have to reexamine Book Five for clues. They're littered throughout Book Six, of course - I went back and looked at them with a happy smile. So, I am definitely a Remus/Tonks shipper as well as a Remus/Sirius shipper. I don't think that the two are mutually exclusive, and I am equally happy to support - and read - both. Again, SQUEE!!!!! My two favorite wizarding grown-ups. There couldn't have been a happier moment in the book for me, except for............
Harry and Ginny - SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I must admit, my heart leapt for joy. She is leagues better than Cho, who I never much liked (like you, I think), and... she's Ginny, and I love her. So I was happier than I could ever say, and I love them together. I was sad when he ended it with her, but not as sad as I might have been (mind you, I had just cried buckets of tears over Dumbledore). I don't think this end for them is permanent. I think that once Voldemort is rid of (I am optimistic, here), Harry will be more able to see where a relationship with Ginny might go. I think there's a possibility for them, and I think they both know it. So... not really an ending as much as a hiatus. Harry's kind of right, he can't appear to be in love with someone with Voldemort out using those people against him. I think a break up with Ginny might signify to Voldemort's followers that he is no longer interested in her. The relationship was apparently brief and shallow, if you - like that great [insert foul swearword here] Snape - don't know Harry and Ginny very well. They may discount it. I think that's what Harry is hoping, and I think Ginny understands. Again - the future is full of possibilities, as we all know, especially for.................

Fleur, on the otherhand... She took a while to redeem herself, didn't she. I would just like to note that her continuing criticisms of the Weasleys did not sit well with me. By the end, I loved her, but at the beginning, I think she was dreadful. I, too, mourn the hotness that was Bill. But mostly, I wish to KEEL FENRIR GREYBACK!!!! Ok. That's out of my system.
On to individual characters.
First, because I need to get this off my chest: I HAVE ALWAYS DISLIKED SEVERUS SNAPE. I'll admit, I have pitied him from time to time, but I have never particularly cared for him. I'll need to find a new song for him and get you a new CD, because I can no longer stand to allow him to have "Will I?" I have been living with this absolutely raging fury all day and have had no way to vent it without tipping off my mum - which I refuse to do (I tried to call you, but no one answered at home, and I didn't want to interrupt you on a family outing with the cell phone). She still is not sure which side he lands on, and damned if I will tell her. It is, however, infuriating to listen to her talk about Snape and not know. I want to scream and rage. I know Arnica thinks he may have been acting on orders, or that he somehow received Dumbledore's blessing (her theory being that Dumbledore is a much more skilled Legilimens that Snape himself), but I doubt it. Dumbledore would never have CHOSEN to leave Harry - or Hogwarts. He still had work to do - the horncruxes, and so on. He would never have LET Snape kill him. That bastard. Little rage left, as I'm getting quite tired, but as soon as we get together again, I think our rage and grief will reach new heights as we further discuss the matter. There's just no going back from some things.
Draco Malfoy - he wouldn't have done it. Totally redeemable. He couldn't do it, and was infact lowering his wand when that [insert foul swearword here] arrived and did the job. Draco is just a scared child trying to follow in Daddy's footsteps, who got in over his head. As much as I loathe and dislike Draco, I don't hate him, and I don't entirely blame him. He kind of makes me think of Regulus Black - another scared child who got in over his head. And, oh, the RAB theories abound, ne? Personally, I'm hoping for a double agent, which might just explain why he was killed...
Slughorn - eh, no real feelings about him either way. Like you. I'm not sure I really like him very much, but I don't really dislike him. I found him to be rather pompous and self-serving - much like Lockhart, only cleverer and more Slytherin.
Fenrir Greyback - I have a job for him involving Severus Snape and a great deal of mauling, but after that, I should like to stuff his mouth with Wolfsbane, douse him in silver nitrate, then jam a big old silver stake into his heart. And that's just revenge for what he did for Remus - who I love dearly.
And alas, it is late, so I must go, but we shall talk, you and I, about this book. I look forward to your insights, as always.
:-)

I also would like to note the dislike of Fleur's Weasley criticisms. Have some manners, please. But, yes, the redemption. :) And, yeah, let me say I felt sick when Greyback was on the roof all bloody, I thought he'd been attacking first years or something. Oh my gosh, I was almost glad it was Bill. I think JKR couldn't have done that, though, as it is a 'children's' book. ::roll of eyes::
I ALSO have always hated Snape!!!! Thank you, but I don't feel vindicated. I WANTED to be wrong. Also, I think Arnica needs a slap upside the head. Gimme a break, is she really saying that? Oi, no. The look of hatred, the PLEADING... ::whimper:: Pardon me. And what truly convinced me was, as I said, the confrontation between Snape and Harry outside Hagrid's hut. Not sure why, right now, but there you have it. And, you know, new cd works for me. ;) I love it tremendously despite that. Also agree about Malfoy. I felt pity for him. He's a kid. And, yeah, I am in favor of the Regulus theory. I like it and it makes sense.
Slughorn? You got it right again, Lockhart in Slytherin with brains. Heh. And Greyback... I LOVE your killing methods, can I help? And I agree, purely due to Remus, never mind the other children. Eep.
Also, how much are we craving angsty-Remus-with-werewolves fic? Cause, dude. Spending time with them would certainly NOT make him reconsider his stance that Tonks should be with someone else. Note the mention that he's too dangerous. He is not. Other werewolves might be.
May I say, darn you? I believe it's your fault I love Remus as much as I do, which is about as much as you do. Heh.
And I was out last night with the family, oddly enough!! :) And now will sleep myself.

So, here is my opinion. I nominate YOU to write me a Remus/Tonks fic that will convert me fully. Because, you know, you ARE a genius. Also, the reason I am also such an AVID Remus/Sirius shipper. YOUR FAULT. ;) So, now you need to help me transition. Because I agree with everything you said. Including disliking Sirius. He is not my favorite character, despite liking him as Harry's godfather and, as you say, a foil to Remus. Plus, I blame you for Scott/Jean, too, so we know you're good at this converting business. ;)
And, I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment that Remus grew up, while Sirius remained an emotionally unbalanced 22 year old. I think they would be hard pressed to bring their *friendship* back to what it was, let alone a romantic relationship, regardless of whether they tried. And, yes, I agree that nothing shook my belief that they were together at some point.
But, honestly, despite the fact that I'm still working on how I feel about the whole situation, I do think Tonks would be a great match for Remus. She's got the same life in her that Sirius did (when he was young), but she is also more mature than he was even in his 30s. If this makes sense. Plus, like you said, we LOVE Tonks. And Remus. =P
AND Harry/Ginny!! Let me join in the swee-age! I never liked Cho, either. And, as you say, it's GINNY. Who ROCKS. And I don't think it's over, it's just started, and they both know it, maybe even Harry, who realizes that he is putting his life on hold until such time as Voldemort is defeated. Not that he has a clue if he can succeed or when, or what he'll do after.
Speaking of, really wishing for an updated AtE. ;)
