A random assortment of things...
So, it's Friday night at 10:20-ish... and I'm ready to fall asleep on my keyboard. I feel old. This is what I get for working at a summer camp. Oi. Stoopid humidity. And I will have Ariel and Theanna know that I did NOT get scared during tonight's thunderstorm! (Well, okay, when we were going to Hannaford and saw an actual lightning bolt cross the sky, I kinda had a moment, but Mom said 'let's go, we're here' and I calmed down.) Wicked proud o' me, yo.
Also, I think we should all thank our parents for taking us to amusement parks. Granted, Mom only had 2 kids, and I had a group of 7, (14, really, since I joined up with another counselor) but Funtown was exhausting. Not kidding when I say that today, only half the kids showed up. Probably because they were all ridonkulously wiped out after a day at the park. I am never riding the tilt-o-whirl again. Astrosphere, maybe. Log flume, booyah. But my neck is all burnt. Damn sun.
Also, my director did my cleaning duty for the week and when I said thanks, he said 'no big deal' and I told him, yes, it was. As one counselor didn't come in today, and the other two were half-asleep and complaining about how tired they were, and I ACTUALLY felt sick, having caught whatever stomach bug Mom's had all week... and he said "Well, I appreciate all the things you do, so..." I felt appreciated. Which made it slightly less worse when I went crazy on the other counselors when they left me to corral the kids for swimming lessons and sat there like they had nothing to do while some boys were trying to run down the stairs, others were pushing and shoving in line, and our two autistic children were skipping around, not paying the least bit of attention to me, and three kiddos were in tears because they didn't want to swim. Yeah. Kinda lost my temper in a not-so-like-me way. Our other director saw me in the locker room and asked if I was okay, and I explained and she acted as if she understood that this was a normal occurrance, which also made me feel appreciated and I feel like maybe the directors DO see more than we think they do. Which is nice for me, bad for the others. Oi.
In other news, re-reading HBP. Still brings me joy. Loving my happy shipping. =D And I love my girls. Had lots of fun last night. Ariel, I forgive you about the shoes. All is well. Also... half-kneazle. ;) And I do not squee over Ron. ...loudly.
Um. There was a point to this at some point. Did I mention the tiredness? Yeah.
Oh!! Here!!
THEANNA!! Since we have a mutual Ben Affleck obsession, this picture will make you squee and love him even more. Check out the book he's reading!!
Because I can, a meme:Where were you...
1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Totally not born. Twenty years from being born. My mother was 13, and in history class at Lincoln Middle School in Portland, though, and can tell me her teacher's name. It was announced over the intercom.
2. when the San Fernando Valley was hit with a huge quake (2/9/1971)
Still not born. Mom and Dad married in June of '71, though.
3. When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Three years and three months from being born. I remember learning about it for the first time in sixth grade, watching a video and crying. I'm overly sensitive, you see.
4. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
I was... 2 years, 5 months old. I don't remember it, obviously.
5. When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
6 years old, and I don't think it registered on my radar.
6. When the Berlin Wall fell (11/7/1989)
Ditto. Six year olds, as I can say from professional experience, are entirely selfish. Everything revolves around them and their family. I don't remember, but Mom and Dad watched it. I probably played My Little Pony or Rainbow Brite instead. =P
7. When the Gulf War began (1/16/1991)
Ah, you would think I would remember this, right? Being 7? Not so much. Actually, I'm putting the timeline together in my head, and this is January. In October of '90, my father died, and in December, I had surgery to put tubes in my ears and such, and then we were looking for a new house and building it, so I think even if I had been old enough to pay attention and notice, say, a war, I didn't. And, quite frankly, a TON of that year is a blank in my mind. Can you say repression? Apparently. =P
8. When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
Oo, okay, I remember that. Not sure if I watched it live, but I think I did. It might just be evening news I remember, but I was home. And 10, almost 11. I remember the trial and the verdict more. My sixth grade teacher made us write an essay about why we wanted to see the verdict, because she got mad that we wanted to watch it. Then we wound up in music class where she put it on the radio for us, anyway, so the essays were completely wasted. Ah, well. I remember even 12 year olds both booing and cheering, and then fighting over the verdict, too.
9. When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
Ah, I remember this well. It was April vacation, and it was Patriot's Day, which is only celebrated in Maine and Massachusetts. We were spring cleaning and took a break to eat lunch, and turned on the TV, and there it was. Needless to say, the cleaning didn't continue. I was 11 and in 5th grade, and cried. I remember my grandmother came over, and we watched the news all day.
10. When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
I was cleaning my room. I was, in fact, putting things back on my dresser after moving furniture and dusting. It was about 11 at night, and Mom was in her room, watching the news, and she came down and knocked on the door and told me and I didn't quite believe her. So we watched the news. I felt horrible for her sons.
11. When Bush was first announced President (11/7/2000)
Oi. I stayed up waiting for official results, but when it was past 11 and we were still waiting on Florida, I went to bed praying. Woke up and remember being highly annoyed. I was a junior in high school, and we had a mock-election. Nader won, which tells you something about Gorham, Maine, doesn't it?
12. When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
I don't remember this, and feel... suitably ashamed.
13. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
I was a senior in high school. I was going to my 4th period English class, and my friend Karen came running in and told me someone bombed the Pentagon. Now, I didn't believe her. She ran back out, and I thought she was being stupid and joking around, as she tended to do. But then she came back and said that planes were hijacked and the Twin Towers were hit, and asked what they were, where were they. I looked at her, and asked where she heard all this, and she told me her last class, on TV. Then our teacher (Hochheiser, Ariel) came in and turned on the TV, and we watched the second tower fall. I sat at my desk, and we all watched silently. Then the principle came and told us to turn off the TV. So our teacher shut the door and kept the TV on. My study hall teacher also let us watch the news. No one got anything done that day, and we just wanted to know what had happened.
14. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas. (2/1/2003)
I was at home, for some reason. It must have been a weekend, because I was a freshman in college. I saw it on TV with my Mom. So sad...
15. When Bush declared War on Iraq. (3/17/2003)
I was at school, in Farmington, alone in my dorm room because my roommate was... well, off somewhere. I watched the news because it had been the talk of the campus all day, and I just remember feeling sick. We were glued to the television for the first month or so, but then the roomie decided it was too depressing. And I watched them pull down Saddam's statue in Baghdad, between classes. Then my friend came, and although I'd been watching for an hour, and the statue wasn't down, she wanted to leave for class Right Then, even though the statue was finally tipping. So I saw that while walking backward to the door. Was annoyed, needless to say. We were WAY early to class, too.
AND!!! WHOOT!!! In 2006, a Cinemagic in WESTBROOK! On County Road! (wherever that is, too excited to think, off exit 46...) Doode. WTF, OMG, girls! =D Granted, Theanna, you'll be out-of-state then, but still... excitement and coolness. :D
Ariel, how does 11:30 on Sunday sound? That's the first showing, the second is at 2 and cuts it closer, perhaps. Depends. Let me know. I can come pick you up, or you can come here... um, for 11:30, I'd say we could meet 11 and be absolutely fine. Unless you want breakfast. Comment, you, I know you're online! ;)
Also, dang it, Theanna, I want plausible fic. I won't say the ship because it is spoileriffic, and I don't want you to ream me out. ;) ::sigh::
Bedtime now.
