Okay, so I can't stop watching
AmazonFail and clicking links. I pretty much lost all yesterday to it and have lost a good portion of today to it too. I don't know, it's like a trainwreck--can't stop staring.
But! Through all my link hopping, a few things have caught my attention:
1) I'm going to start using my Twitter. This is not very important, but it's noteworthy. (I'm
ladysarai there. Lemme know who you are!)
2) This is an
excellent article on
why AmazonFail is/was a really bad thing. Quoting some, ellipses and bolding are mine:
"The onus is on us, as Tim Wise has taught so well on the topic of white privilege. We cannot be given the benefit of the doubt, because it is always us who get the benefit of the doubt in our society, and... we can never let this happen.
...The vigilance and outrage demonstrated on Twitter are necessary, not because the folks at Amazon are bad people, but because the books that were de-ranked were de-ranked because it is always the outsider whose books get de-ranked and “mainstream” society... must self-police ruthlessly in order to guard against this kind of thing happening.
...In effect: guilty until proven innocent is the standard to which we must hold ourselves. Because that’s how the other half lives, without any choice in the matter."3) Single
BEST VISUAL AID EVER applied to the situation found
here. This is the "7 Lessons of AmazonFail" and I consider all my wasted hours well spent just for finding that blog and the accompanying visual aid. Seriously.
And in conclusion--internet, you are kind of awesome.
