Yuletide Recs!
Dec. 28th, 2005 12:48 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Okay, so my first "down" day since coming home for break, and I spend it online reading Yuletide fics and watching Christmas movies and Little House on the Prairie with Mom (or while Mom naps)...
It's a good day. And I made omelettes for breakfast! For the first time! Yum, go me and my domestic self.
10 Things I Hate About You:
In Accordance
I honestly never thought of reading "10 Things" fics, but... wow, this is awesome. 5 moments/reflections in Kat's life. And Kat and Bianca's characterizations are PERFECT.
At this rate, one day Kat is going to end up barefoot and pregnant in a muumuu with three shrieking babies and a teakettle and, like, a rolling pin.
Bianca's not exactly sure of the logistics of the whole thing, but the rolling pin is essential.
Four Ways Patrick and Kat Probably Break Up and One Way They Probably Don't
Everyone expected her and Patrick to be together forever, like a fairy tale, but this was real life, and she wasn't going to do what people expected just so they'd like her.
Winnie the Pooh:
In Which A New Child Comes to the Forest
I NEVER thought of Winnie the Pooh as fic-fodder. But OMG, this fic is SO... sweet, touching, bittersweet... Dude. Christopher Robin returns to the Hundred Acre Wood with his son.
His own father would have known exactly what to say. And it dawned on Christopher, as he realized that the small lump he was sitting on was not, in fact, a tree root, but was Piglet still nestled in his jacket pocket, that that was exactly what the Piglet stories had been for -- for letting Christopher feel scared, safely.
Batman Begins:
One Life From Many Deaths
GUH. Just read it. I love Batman. Really, I do.
Passions of a Man
Dude, I loved Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine in the movie, and if you picture them as Lucius and Alfred here? This is good.
Captain Planet
Preservation
Dude, it's CAPTAIN PLANET!!! And it's a NEAT idea. And not at all corny or whatever you might think. Read it for sentimental value, then love it for... it. (Although, sadly, I did have to stop and think to remember who the characters were... that makes me SAD. ::sigh:: Now I want this on DVD.)
Mythology/Classics:
Akhos
Oh, how I LOVE the Trojan War and oh. Not the movie, but the actual mythology, with Priam's many, many sons and Paris challenging Menelaus and disappearing into a crowd and Helen and HECTOR! I ADORE Hector!
I love this. I have a weakness for Helen and Hector interactions that do not involve sex or lust or anything like that. After 9 years of war, they're both tired and defensive and noble and OH, READ IT!!
"Gentle Andromache embroiders flowers for her lord, and I - I weave the blood and filth of war. Would that no such weaving is needed. No, brother, no hero I, though I shall be as an ignominious byword among those yet born." She smiles bleakly. "Immortality of a different sort."
Upon this, Hector, who in all the years that Helen was in Troy had not said a word of cruelty to her, is silent.
Darkwing Duck
First Day Family
Darkwing Duck! But, this is GREAT. The characterizations are spot-on, and it's serious and funny and cute and sad and yay! The terror who flaps in the night!!
He buys the house because he knows, in a distant, academic way, that little girls need houses; they need bedrooms they can be ordered to clean, and yards to play their games in. They need neighbors with children they can befriend, and local schools to attend, and all the trappings and trimmings of a normal life.
Dirty Dancing
Holding On
I never wanted fic for this movie, or even a sequel, because really, how do you improve on that ending? Do you really want to think that there is anything else after that marvelous ending? But, yeah, this is cute and sad and... I like it. Especially the distinction between "Frances" and "Baby." (I have a weakness for that type of dichotemy, it seems... see "Batman/Bruce," "Robin/Dick," etc...)
Fairy Tales:
Witch
Wow, this is... new and interesting, and read it.
Grey's Anatomy:
7 Days to Change Your Life
OMG!!!! It's George! It's Izzie! It's in-character! And funny, and sweet and SO like the show! I LOVE THIS!!
"I'm not Meredith, you know," Izzie said defensively. "I don't ignore what's in front of me."
"Yeah, well, I'm not Alex, either," George said pointedly.
Ready to Rise
OMG, if I loved the first, this is SO GOOD. Guh. THIS is why I adore Izzie and George. Izzie and George are SO F-ING AWESOME. I can so see it happening this way.
It is like this, mostly.
Simple. Easy.
Intimacy that just is.
He reaches out, and she bends with his winds so she can keep him from breaking. He has her to fall back on, and they share confidences and fears and gossip; they bond over bad horror movies and popcorn and comparing notes on surgical techniques.
They become better friends.
It is like this, mostly, until something in her shifts and she begins to wonder. One day she thinks, what if, and then the voice in her head repeats the mantra. She wants it for the sake of wanting, this possibility that is pregnant with quiet joy, this emotion that she can almost taste.
Love, Actually:
Both Sides Now
Oh, Karen and Harry's story. From beginning to, well, the end of the movie. And SO well done.
He knows they're for good when it occurs to him that he can't say who the iron had belonged to in the first place, and which of the two of them had picked the pattern of the new sheets.
Madeleine L'Engle books:
On Black Holes, Miracles, Singularities and Nothingness
Charles Wallace, all grown up, but still oh-so-Charles Wallace.
Charles Wallace felt small when he thought about black holes, but he never felt inconsequential. After all, he would never turn into nothing.
He wondered if he grew up too quickly, too strangely, given such responsibility at such young ages. And now he is grown, and he is reduced to dreams of the past to remind him that there are things beyond himself, beyond his imagination.
Oh, that's enough. SUCH of the bedtime. (And I'm still only halfway through the alphabet!)
I think my favorites are the Grey's Anatomy fics...
