Not talking about the Olympics. Hmph.

Incredibly grudging kudos to Italy. They had an incredible race. They did well. They are national heroes now. Yay for them.
Argh.
But GERMANY? And SWEDEN!!!!! *SWEDEN!* Of all countries, Sweden.
For Norway to not medal is ridiculous enough, but *5th*?! And behind France? And SWEDEN?!

Not only that, but SWEDEN with a NORWEGIAN coach! A former Norwegian Olympian as a SWEDISH coach?!
That is like a former Red Sox player going to coach the Yankees. (Or vice-verse, if you're a Yankees fan.)
Seriously. Like the announcer said, how did Norway let one of their Olympians go to coach SWEDEN?!
(In case you hadn't noticed, there is a huge rivalry/whatever between Sweden and Norway. I'm not entirely certain of the reasons behind it, but I've grown up with it. My grandfather used to call my grandmother "Swede!" when they argued and he couldn't come up with any retorts... because she is about 1/8th Swedish. Which makes me... gosh, what, 1/32nd? ;) Not enough to count!)
And seriously, NEVER ask her if she's made Swedish Meatballs. (Someone did that once. I think my grandmother managed to uninvite them to dinner, and my grandmother is the QUEEN of manners.)
But anyway, yeah. Rivalry there. Like Red Sox and Yankees.
So, guh.
But the Red Sox/Yankees analogy works much better for the Italy/Norway rivalry in cross country skiing.
At least, as far as the intensity goes.
And cross country skiing is HUGE in Norway. HUGE.
And I mourn tonight. I feel very badly for the Norwegian team. They must feel so badly tonight...
The Norwegian fans were in shock, the commentators said. I believe it. *I* was in shock. Mom was in shock. Oh, it was bad.
I think Frode Estil used up everything he had last Sunday, when he had the most AMAZING race I've ever seen. (Last place to *2nd,* getting himself and Norway a silver medal after being involved in a crash as the race began and starting the race WAY, WAY behind the other skiers and skiing half the race with a broken ski. Amazing race. Amazing skiing by him...)
So we can't be at all angry with him, but it was his leg that killed Norway's medal chances in today's race.
Oh, it's so sad.
Norway and USA are both having issues winning skiing medals. I mean, look at Bode Miller. What is going *ON*?! Norway hasn't yet won a gold in cross country. Which is... disappointing.
But I guess it has to be someone else's turn at some point.
I'm just a bit stunned.
Good for you, Italian skiers. They had a great race and deserved the win, no matter how much I wish it had ended differently.
Watching the medal ceremony for speed skating, and WOW, beautiful with the snow falling and the flags flying.
Not a huge fan of Shani Davis, though. I love Joey Cheek, though. :)
It's very appropriate, all this snow falling there. *THAT* is where all our snow is. >.< Argh.
Meanwhile, that's a race I won't forget soon. Sadly. ::whines::

SMILE! =P I think I'm too much of a team player... he lost a lot of my respect when he refused to participate in the relay because he wanted to focus on his own races. I'd say Shani is a Slytherin. ;) (Of course, that's not a terrible thing.)

No, a Slytherin would have bad mouthed the rest of the team right back. I think he's a Gryffindor! Out there on his own, not caring what he does or doesn't do with the team, skating for his mama and all those little kids out there on some block of streets I'll never visit. He'll leave the rest of those Hufflepuffs to their sad little team races. *grins*
