Oh, canon!

lady_sarai: (never let go)
Read The Last Battle today.

::sigh::

Now I'm done. And... hmm.

No comments tonight on it, I'm digesting it all. And finding it impossible to even think of picking up a new book right now.

Went to Target tonight and bought movies!!!

=D $10 DVDs. I couldn't help it!

I got Batman Begins (FINALLY!!!) and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, the 2-disc edition! With extra footage!!!

My Robin Hood fangirl is squeeing. =D

And I found the BBC Chronicles of Narnia miniseries and... yeah, I bought them. (Fairly cheaply, too!!)

Been watching The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.

[livejournal.com profile] alphabet26, you're right. The special effects ARE "special." And it's insanely loyal to the book. Down to dialogue in bits.

And I'm getting terribly sleepy. =P

Oddly, it's making me want to watch certain scenes in the new movie, which I just might do before sleeping.

I would like to say that I may have been in the HP fandom entirely too long.

How do I know this?

Because when trying to figure out the Narnian timeline, I realize there are timelines created by others, even possibly using Lewis' own notes.

But I come from the HP fandom, where even JKR's own words are sometimes disputed as being NOT canon, because what she says isn't in the books.

Heck, even her own books aren't considered canon by some! (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through The Ages, that is.)

So. Even though I generally count JKR's word as LAW, it is widely known and accepted that she's horrid at dating things. So sometimes you pick and chose what is canon, when it comes to the Harry Potter world.

And that very "the author's word or DOOOM!" mentality has so been engraved in my brain. The idea of taking another author's word as canon, even if it comes from C.S. Lewis' notes... grates.

I feel snobbish for this. Or... elitist. Or... some other unflattering emotion. =P That would probably make me terribly unpopular with serious Narnia fans.

(Speaking of Narnia fandom, though, dear fandom: Stop writing RPF and incest. And Lucy/Tumnus. And other things to make my brain bleed. Thank you. And to the RENT fandom: using song lyrics as titles does not make you clever. That is all.)

The promised requested drabbles for [livejournal.com profile] larinza.

Scott, mourning Jean, flowers (100 words) )

Since you said "any of them," I thought I'd try writing about a Hufflepuff other than Cedric.

I chose Susan Bones, but as you'll see, he wouldn't stay out of it.

HP; Hufflepuffs, any of them, near water (100 words) )

Now, [livejournal.com profile] arnica's, which will not be a drabble, and [livejournal.com profile] minisinoo's, which... also may not be a drabble. ;) But those may wait until after bed, Spring Fling and other weekend plans. We shall see.
lady_sarai: (RENT friends)
For [livejournal.com profile] aradiachiba, Harry Potter and RENT:

HP; Draco )

HP; Harry/Ginny fluff )

RENT; Mark/Maureen, pre-musical (200 words) )

And speaking of RENT, for [livejournal.com profile] scribophile, who asked for something about Roger.

Uh. Definitely more than a drabble, and maybe I'm cheating because most of this was written a while ago, but I never could figure out what to do with it until now. :)

RENT; Roger (431 words) )

[livejournal.com profile] larinza and [livejournal.com profile] arnica, yours are coming. Eventually. =P

But now, it's bedtime. Definitely past so.
lady_sarai: (Hufflepuff @ heart)
Hmm. I am solidly a Leo, being born August 12th, but... Meh on my sign sometimes.

LEO
(July 23 - August 22)
The Lion. Fixed, fire, yang - planetary ruler: the Sun. Keywords: "I WILL"

Leo is the fifth sign of the zodiac and rules the back, the spine, and the heart. Positive traits include creativity, charisma, generosity, warmth, enthusiasm, a natural talent for leadership, and a great deal of inner power; negative traits are haughtiness, snobbery, an expectation that one is the centre of attention and should be waited on by everyone else, profligacy, lack of realism, dominance that can lead to bullying, and a refusal to change one's mind even in the face of solid facts.

I feel like the positive traits fit me just fine, even if I dislike leadership. But.. the negatives? In all honesty, I don't see them. Hit me over the head and tell me why I'm wrong, but... I have a hell of a lot of negative traits, I know, but... not those, necesarily.

Hufflepuff

Although this might seem like a strange sign for Hufflepuffs, Hufflepuff Leos do exist. Many become the prefects of their House when they reach the proper age, for they are good with other people, have a fine sense of initiative, and have the nobility of spirit to see that the right thing gets done at all times. They like to set a good example for others - the phrase "noblesse oblige" probably sums it up well (nobility imposes obligation). Generous to a fault, they will give everything they have (be it money, energy, or loyalty) to anyone who needs it.

Harry Potter Astrology

That being the coolness I wanted to share. :) Hee... I am a contradiction! But... yeah, THAT seems fitting. =P Heh. Girls who know me in RL? Whatcha think?

No movie for me. Too difficult to be online and watching at once. The movie trumps the internet. ;)

Am finding some marvelous fic out there. Weee! Completely unproductive tonight. Ugh.
lady_sarai: (R/H end of innocence)
Wee!! I actually wrote tonight! =D Although I stayed up later than I meant to. Heh.

So! First few drabble meme requests:

For [livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan; Tonks as a child, with Sirius: )

Also for [livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan; Tonks and Remus, fluff (150 words): )

Sadly, with this meager offering, I believe it is PAST bedtime. =P
lady_sarai: (Hufflepuff @ heart)
Everyone should go join [livejournal.com profile] everyfiveyears right now and claim some characters. Because it looks like it'll be fun!

I've claimed Cedric Diggory, which makes me happy, because I'll finally have to write something with him in it. ;)

And the premise is great... a fic set every 5 years of a character's life. I already know what I'll do for my last one... or have an idea, anyway. ;)

Also, weeee!!!! My icon won 1st place at [livejournal.com profile] theatreicontest!!

See! (I'm actually quite proud of this one, and I've been dying to show it off...)

Image hosting by Photobucket

So, I'm happy. Except it's been a fairly crappy day/night in Real Life. But what does Real Life matter? =P

My world film class was cancelled! Yippee!! I can watch LOST now!
lady_sarai: (Hufflepuff @ heart)
Title: Believe
Author:[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai
Rating: PG
Length: 2,037 words
Summary: But Ernie has always been a busy student, and while they have had the odd polite conversation, he realizes that he knows nothing about Hufflepuff’s resident ghost.
Warnings: Christian theology mentioned in context, and hopefully no one is offended.
Author's note/Disclaimer: I own absolutely nothing, and am in fact in debt. Care to pay off my student loans? This is for fun.

Written for [livejournal.com profile] omniocular’s January challenge, (and technically late, although before midnight in California) in which I drew Ernie Macmillan and the Fat Friar and spent the month wondering how on earth I would write this fic without offending the masses with religion. And after spending a month fretting over this fic, it pretty much came to me fully formed and wrote itself. In fact, the fastest written fic I've had in... a long, long while. Divine intervention, perhaps. ;) Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan for being my beta extraordinaire.

Directly follows events in Goblet of Fire.

The Hufflepuff common room is, like all the common rooms, decorated in House colors. )

Feedback is love! Feedback me!
lady_sarai: (Remember Cedric)
I've got to rec this fic, which was recced to me. Various POVs after Cedric's death.

(It's movie-based, so there's quite a bit of... well, things that don't follow book canon. But I managed to look past it because for the most part, the characterizations are on and the language is worth it. The word choice... wicked.)

In the Country of Lost Things by [livejournal.com profile] eudaimon.

working on reading other recs, but dial-up is so slow in comparison. sigh.

Also, anyone else having issues with getting comments and replies via email? Or is it me? And have I asked this before? =P

(Had a plot bunny attack and write itself on the car ride down, but now that I've got a Word document open, it has run away and hidden. GRRR!)

Hmm.

lady_sarai: (Remember Cedric)
All right, this is what I get for rambling on and on without my books handy!! Came home for Thanksgiving break and dragged out PoA...

Yeah, Cedric is a *fifth* year in PoA, making him a *sixth* year in GoF... which just throws me off-kilter. He's only two years ahead of Harry and one ahead of Cho. Not sure why that matters, but still. I always thought him a seventh year. Well, no N.E.W.T.s for him, then. But PoA would be his O.W.L. year. Randomly.

Also, the age thing is still baffling me. The cut off at Hogwarts must be August/September-ish, because Hermione's birthday is in September and she is 17 in HBP. HER sixth year. So it isn't completely crazy that by Halloween Cedric would be old enough to put his name in the goblet.

Harry throws me off every time. He's got to be one of the youngest in his class. Which is an interesting thought. Oo, Ariel, it might be a bit like you and me... I'm so used to being at the older end of the spectrum, it didn't occur to me to think of it from the other angle. How about you?

...I'm over-thinking things again.

And where did I get the idea that Hermione called him the cutest boy in school? Did I read that in another journal entry or something? The first mention of him is Oliver Wood bemoaning the switch from Slytherin to Hufflepuff because they'd been preparing to compete against the wrong team and Cedric had put together a good one, and he was an "excellent" seeker. And Oliver's chasers giggled. Angelina calls him "that tall, good looking one" and Katie adds "strong and silent"... then they dissolve into giggles again.

(I love that, btw. SO normal girl behavior. All girls do this, no matter how they try to deny it.)

Also, where did the hostility from Fred and George come from in GoF? Because when Harry wakes up, and he finds out they lost the match, they don't seem angry with Cedric. In fact, George doesn't seem to cast any blame at all. He says:

"Diggory got the snitch," said George. "Just after you fell. He didn't realize what happened. When he looked back and saw you on the ground, he tried to call it off. Wanted a rematch. But they won fair and square... even Wood admits it."

...Maybe it's Mr. Diggory's behavior and bragging about it. Hmm.

Also, that'd be an interesting ficlet, that scene. Randomly.

...and how many 16 year old team captains would try to call a rematch in that situation? Would Oliver Wood?

Gods, I need professional help.
lady_sarai: (Hufflepuff @ heart)
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai and [livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan... can you tell what our chosen career paths are?

[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: interesting and random: did Moody do the same lessons with his 7th years as his 4th years? and how about Remus?
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: cause... interesting.
[livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan: I'm not sure
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: hmm.
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: I wonder.... what do you think about that? using (I assume) variations of the same lessons for older and younger students?
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: when you think about it, boy, DADA is not at all a stable class.
[livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan: too true
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: they so need a curriculum. ;-)
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: ::gags:: LAS!!!
[livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan: eeeeeeeeeeeeww!!!
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: ::laughs::
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: only teachers would get that.
[livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan: I've actually worried often about that
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: regarding Hogwarts?
[livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan: yes
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: ....I have too.
[livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan: well - the inconstant DADA curriculum
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: which proves JKR does not work in the public school system.
[livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan: hehe
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: I've heard that in England every teacher in every school teaches the same curriculum.... across the country.
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: now, regrettably and shamefully, I dunno if that's true, but if it is... ::mind boggles::
[livejournal.com profile] zoe_chan: ack!
[livejournal.com profile] lady_sarai: Yes.

...Seriously, though, that is some shoddy education Harry and every Hogwarts student from Riddle's request on had gotten. And the Ministry and Hogwarts PTA want to throw Dumbledore out... maybe they should start campaigning for a DADA curriculum? No wonder Lucius wanted to send Draco to Durmstrang based solely on that class. ;)

/tongue-firmly-in-cheek.

(I so have Cedric bunnies!! WOO!!)
lady_sarai: (Remember Cedric)
This got rather out-of-hand and a bit longer and more in-depth than I planned. But please read and comment. Please.

In defense of my newfound love... AKA: 'I am not a fangirl'... (beware, a handful of spoilers) )

....So, I've got to go to bed now, which is one of the reasons I am stopping. I am sure more will come to me, which is saying something... since that wound up discussing Cedric, Cho, Cedric/Cho, Harry/Cho, Cedric's role in the series, the role his death plays in the series... and finally, the point I was getting at in the first place with this post, Cedric's personality (book and movie and the difference) and all-in-all, why I like him. And the 3rd Task. Mustn't forget that.

I guess it suffices to say that I am by no means a NEW Cedric fan. The movie may have brought this all to light, but it's been lingering all along. I know that a whole new batch of shiny fic will be arriving, thanks to moviegoers and the hottness of Cedric... but we always knew he was hot. We always knew how his story ends. Why hasn't there been more fic?

Edit: err.... yeah. This post clears up a few things I got a bit wrong, not having PoA with me when I wrote this. Heh.

Random

Nov. 20th, 2005 01:01 pm
lady_sarai: (Hufflepuff @ heart)
Okay, I keep seeing things written about the hotness that is (or maybe are?) Rupert Grint's arms. Must agree.

It's a shame he's so much younger than me. ::sigh:: Oh, Ron.

In an effort to avoid homework (which I am doing in a rather spectacular fashion this weekend), I offer this:

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Random, but true.

See what happens when I stay at school on a weekend? I update 8 times in 3 days. (Although since Friday's were after midnight, I updated 7 times yesterday. Scary.)

I so need a life.

Also, some Cedric Diggory. Ariel, he is SO in my closet.
lady_sarai: (Remember Cedric)
All right, based on my newly discovered adoration of Cedric Diggory, I spent the night searching the web for good Cedric-centered fic.

Sadly, my last post comprises the best fics I could find (or at least my favorites), and there are precious few.

So, I am sending out a call. A request for Cedric stories.

Cedric GEN stories, specifically.

Most importantly, canon-compliant Cedric fic.

Cedric alive and well, Cedric growing up, Cedric BOOK-CANON fics. I'll take Cedric/Cho! I'd love Cedric interacting with other characters. Cedric and his parents... the other champions... teachers... Even characters discussing Cedric after his death!

I'd like book!canon-compliant Cedric fic.

Because we say "Remember Cedric Diggory," and how better than in fanfic?

That, and I'm a bit of a stickler for canon. And the book has so much MORE of him. ;)
lady_sarai: (Remember Cedric)
Gosh darn it, I've done nothing but avoid working on my units and portfolio today. And ha! Lesson plans? Not likely.

I guess every so often you need a mental health day, eh? (What am I, Canadian? I mean, I know it's not far from Maine, but come on.)

Also, have aquired a new obsession with Cedric Diggory. I mean... I always loved him. Always have been all sniffly and waving my little "Remember Cedric Diggory" sign... but the movie? I think I had built Cedric up quite a bit without knowing it.

So, I went on a search across the internet-from Sugar Quill to Fiction Alley to the Pit. And I've been reading Cedric stories.

So, here goes:

Musings. By PiperX.

Cedric and Cho by the lake after the Second Task, discussing Harry. I LOVE this one.

Astraea by Tannhäuser.

Oh, I have few words for how I love this. Cedric as a 3rd year. Professor Kettleburn! Who is quite cool! And... Just read it.

To Be Hufflepuff by Ciircee

I come back to this one again and again. It may not be perfect, but I love it. A prefect explains to the newest Hufflepuffs what it means to be a Badger, in the fall after Goblet of Fire.

Pride Before Fall by Canadian Pixie.

Cedric's POV of the 3rd Task, worth it just because I really can see Cedric's worst fear being... that. And it makes me love this.

That Will Never Die by Twinsais.

So, faulty italics aside, this is not a bad fic. Harry, post HBP, runs into Mrs. Diggory.

A Terrible Fate by Fionnabhair Nic Aillil.

Okay, wasn't sure at first, but the 3rd part won me over. 3 interactions between Cedric Diggory and Ginny Weasley, 1 for each school year. The last seems so... Cedric.

Eve by Arctic Demon.

Totally surprised me. This is actually Founderfic, but...

"Genesis" prompt fic by [livejournal.com profile] scoured.

Written for the first challenge at hp500, this ficlet traces Cedric through his sorting, Quidditch and entering his name for the TriWizard Tournament. Characterization is on. My only issue is that the Sorting Hat makes a comment about no one wanting to be sorted into Hufflepuff. I SO beg to differ. ;) ::points to icon:: Otherwise, I agree with the Hat.

Okay, wound up spending about 3 hours searching about for Cedric fic, and there is a distressing lack of it.

I am now pouting.

Any one care to find me something marvelous? Or write it for me? ;)

Sigh. I am a Cedric fangirl. And have always been-I just didn't know it. God help me.

ETA: I have a Cedric fic request going here. But comments here work, as well.

I want book!canon-compliant Cedric. Sigh. So much.
lady_sarai: (reality)
Dude. Sports Illustrated!! Quidditch World Cup article!! HA!

I laugh.

Also, I have so much love for Alton Brown. Been watching Food Network while working on homework today, and earlier there was "The Secret Life of Thanksgiving..."

Which so disapointed me. Sigh. I have a thing about Thanksgiving. I love it, but I hate the historical inaccuracies and stereotypes and such. I fully blame my professors and being an Education major for this. But there you have it. And Jim O'Connor... totally had stereotypical images and inaccurate info on his show.

Alton Brown, however. Oh, there is love. He just had someone talking about the foods they really ate at the first Thanksgiving, and yay! Accuracy!

I am a geek.

But the show is on again tomorrow at 4 pm. =D Also, here.
lady_sarai: (Hufflepuff @ heart)
Inspired by something [livejournal.com profile] three_nails said...

A bit of rant on a fundamental difference between the movies and the books )

I had more to say, and will have more, but I am hungry now.

(I really, really, really want more than 3 icons. I so want some more HP ones now... Sigh.)
lady_sarai: (Hufflepuff @ heart)
Okay, real quick, as it's 2 am and I'm beyond tired...

Cut for rambly movie spoilers! ) And it is bedtime now...

Course, now I want a "Remember Cedric Diggory" icon. Sigh.
lady_sarai: (reality)
After a 47 minute scan, my new AntiSpyware program found 80... that's right, 80... spyware/adware programs on my computer, effecting 600 or so files. Yeah, yay, as right before I ran this program, I ran AdAware, Spybot AND McAfee Anti-Spyware. All three programs told I was a-ok, no problems found.

How's that for a great, big "Grrr, Argh!"

So, restarted the computer, but it took so long I decided, hey, try running that scan again. Yeah, it's found 12. In 30 minutes.

::slams head on desk::

May I say, I HATE technology?

I would, however, recommend everyone download "Microsoft AntiSpyware" from here. I'm hoping it will save my computer, and it seems to be doing that.

But, have been reading some AWESOME fic in [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon. It's awesome. I do love my Harry Potter fics... Gen fics, no less! Girl power gen fics, even!

I particularly recommend [livejournal.com profile] tangleofthorns' "Sea Change," found here. Awesome, awesome look at Narcissa. And I usually avoid Narcissa fics, for one reason or another, but this one. Just read it, if only for the beautiful language. The author has a great way with words.

(Also, please note the perdy new icon from [livejournal.com profile] mage_brandebouc! =D Jimmy Stewart! And yay for the quote! =D)
lady_sarai: (Hufflepuff @ heart)
Ooh, lookit!! New Marta art! Spoileriffic art, though... But SO perdy. Pardon the drool.

Ariel, shut up. I hear you, you know. "Won-won," indeed. Bah. ;)

Also, was on the phone for 3 hours and 51 minutes today with Dell Tech support. Good god. Ryan managed to get a virus on Mom's computer, and it made it impossible to even sign on, so I called. Yeah. Talked to India. They were very nice.

Hopefully marginally entertaining account of the joys and wonders of Dell Technical Support and How I Contributed to the Economy in India. )

AND, ee!! Spoilers for the JKR interview that is highly spoilerific, but insanely fun for detail-hungry me... )

Okay, so maybe it was a little more spoilery than I had planned when I started. But still. I feel happy. Ariel, stop saying that. I know you're mocking me. I have telepathy that way.

And now, to bed, so I can be at your house at 9:30, so we can make the age-old decision: IHOP or Panera before movie?
lady_sarai: (Hufflepuff @ heart)
So, it's Friday night at 10:20-ish... and I'm ready to fall asleep on my keyboard. I feel old. This is what I get for working at a summer camp. Oi. Stoopid humidity. And I will have Ariel and Theanna know that I did NOT get scared during tonight's thunderstorm! (Well, okay, when we were going to Hannaford and saw an actual lightning bolt cross the sky, I kinda had a moment, but Mom said 'let's go, we're here' and I calmed down.) Wicked proud o' me, yo.

Also, I think we should all thank our parents for taking us to amusement parks. Granted, Mom only had 2 kids, and I had a group of 7, (14, really, since I joined up with another counselor) but Funtown was exhausting. Not kidding when I say that today, only half the kids showed up. Probably because they were all ridonkulously wiped out after a day at the park. I am never riding the tilt-o-whirl again. Astrosphere, maybe. Log flume, booyah. But my neck is all burnt. Damn sun.

A bit of camp stuff... something good and a mini-rant about co-workers )

In other news, re-reading HBP. Still brings me joy. Loving my happy shipping. =D And I love my girls. Had lots of fun last night. Ariel, I forgive you about the shoes. All is well. Also... half-kneazle. ;) And I do not squee over Ron. ...loudly.

Um. There was a point to this at some point. Did I mention the tiredness? Yeah.

Oh!! Here!!

THEANNA!! Since we have a mutual Ben Affleck obsession, this picture will make you squee and love him even more. Check out the book he's reading!!

Also, a meme... )

AND!!! WHOOT!!! In 2006, a Cinemagic in WESTBROOK! On County Road! (wherever that is, too excited to think, off exit 46...) Doode. WTF, OMG, girls! =D Granted, Theanna, you'll be out-of-state then, but still... excitement and coolness. :D

Ariel, how does 11:30 on Sunday sound? That's the first showing, the second is at 2 and cuts it closer, perhaps. Depends. Let me know. I can come pick you up, or you can come here... um, for 11:30, I'd say we could meet 11 and be absolutely fine. Unless you want breakfast. Comment, you, I know you're online! ;)

Also, dang it, Theanna, I want plausible fic. I won't say the ship because it is spoileriffic, and I don't want you to ream me out. ;) ::sigh::

Bedtime now.
